Leonardo Da Vinci wrote all of his private notes backwards.
In order to know what he was writing, he would hold a mirror up to the paper while writing his thoughts down.
But the real question is… why?
A lot people believe that Da Vinci did this to make it more difficult for people to steal his ideas… I don’t think this adds up.
This man spent basically all of his time inventing new things — so if he was that concerned about protecting his thoughts, why wouldn’t he just create a new symbol language or short-hand that only he understood?
I think there’s actually a really simple explanation: Da Vinci was left handed, and I think it’s probable that he simply didn’t want to smudge the ink while taking notes.
I know... this option is not as fun as some magical conspiracy, but it's the most realistic reason.
