In the late 60’s, Hollywood was about to die.
The movie industry as a whole was running out of money and TV was becoming more and more popular. But the biggest reason were the Baby Boomers.
This new generation was slowly but surely losing interest in the movies. They felt the stories being told didn’t honestly reflect the world they were growing up in — with the rise of the civil rights movement, assassinations of presidents & leaders, and the never-ending horrors of war, it seemed like Hollywood was ignoring reality by avoiding the darker stories of human life.
Luckily, there were a handful unproven dudes with beards that were determined to make movies that would resonate again. Their names were Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and a few other young filmmakers made up what is now known as the ‘Movie Brats’.
These guys formed a brotherhood that helped each other get their first big breaks in Hollywood. George Lucas helped film The Godfather. Spielberg helped edit Taxi Driver. The entire group helped Lucas bring the first Star Wars movie to life.
They were the force that helped Hollywood skyrocket again in the 70’s, and together they made some of the most important movies of all time.
Whats incredible to me is that these are the some of the best filmmakers to ever do it, and none of them had any ego about helping the other win.
They all saw the bigger picture. The art they loved was in trouble, and the only way to save it was by working together to make as many great movies as possible. They understood that if one of them succeeded, so would the rest… and that's exactly what happened.
Thats how the movie brats helped save Hollywood.
